FFT Exemption policy from SAFE Company Certification

The FFT Administrator has the flexibility to exempt contracts or contractors from the requirement to be SAFE Company registered/certified in the following situations based on the risk to workers doing the contract:

  • Contracts which involve only travel on public highway or by scheduled commercial air or water transport (certified carriers) and which do not involve fieldwork by the contractor or the contractor’s workers.

  Examples:

-       meeting facilitation
-       GIS and mapping (in the office)
-       Office work only

  • Contracts which can be reasonably expected to only attract bidders which do not normally work in the forest industry and for which the SAFE Company’s Certification may not be practical to expect on a continuous basis.

  Examples:

-       Aerial photography
-       Nursery’s
-       Transportation Firms
-       Community groups intended for economic or relationship development

  • Contracts of an emergency nature where the timing or the work may make the registration and certification unreasonable.

  Examples:

-       Action is required to prevent damage or risk to environment, human life or safety.

  • Contractors where it is too onerous to expect these firms to meet the expectations within the needed time frame. To meet this exemption the contractor must be working closely with BC Forest Safety Council to become SAFE certified and must not be in direct competition for the work with a SAFE certified contractor.

Any exemptions issued as indicated above do not effect or reduce the application of worksafe requirements and FFT expectation of diligence under those requirements internally, by our recipients and their subcontractors.
